Our beliefs
What we believe
A summary of what Christ Church teaches, with the Scripture behind each point.
-
The Bible
Scripture is the inspired Word of God and God's revelation of himself to people. It is our rule for what we believe and how we live. (2 Timothy 3:15-17, 1 Peter 1:23-25)
-
God
There is one God, eternally self-existent, who has revealed himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. (Deuteronomy 6:4, Matthew 28:19)
-
People
God made us good and in his own image. We went our own way, and our only hope of being put right is Jesus Christ. (Genesis 1:26-31, Romans 5:12-21)
-
Salvation
God's grace has been offered to everyone. We are saved through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, made new by the Holy Spirit and made heirs of eternal life. (Titus 2:11, 3:5-7, Romans 10:13-15)
-
How you know you are saved
Inwardly, by the witness of the Spirit. Outwardly, by a life that changes. (Romans 8:16, 1 Thessalonians 4:7)
-
Baptism in water
Anyone who has repented and believed should be baptized. Going under the water and coming up out of it says publicly that the old life is finished and a new one has started. We baptize in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. (Acts 2:38, Romans 6:4)
-
Communion
Bread and the fruit of the vine, shared as a memorial of Christ's death and a declaration that he is coming back. It is for all believers. (Luke 22:19-20, 1 Corinthians 11:25)
-
The baptism in the Holy Spirit
We believe every believer should expect and seek it. It brings power for living and serving and the gifts that go with it. It can come separately from and after the new birth. (Luke 24:49, Acts 1:4-8, 1 Corinthians 12)
-
Growing in holiness
Sanctification is God's will for every believer, and we pursue it by the power of the Holy Spirit and obedience to Scripture. (Hebrews 12:14, 1 Peter 1:15-16)
-
The church
The church is the body of Christ and the place where God dwells by his Spirit, sent into the world with a commission. Every believer is a genuine part of it.
-
Ministry
God gives ministry to the church for two reasons: to take the gospel to the world and to build up the body of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-13)
-
Divine healing
Healing is provided for in the atonement and is the privilege of every believer. (Isaiah 53:4-5, Matthew 8:16-17)
-
The hope ahead
We look for the return of Jesus Christ, the resurrection of those who have died in him, his reign, a final judgment, and a new heaven and a new earth where righteousness is at home. (1 Thessalonians 4:16, 2 Peter 3:13, Revelation 21:1)
Purpose and vision
Why we are here
Our purpose is to build a church that reaches people of every race, nationality, background and income, and is not sorted into groups by color or wealth or class. Our vision is that a church should be a hospital for hurting people rather than a country club.
There are a great many people who have been wounded, by life, by sin, by other people, and sometimes by religion itself. We want to find them, care for them, bind up their wounds, bring them in and feed them back to health, until they are strong enough to help somebody else.
Our goal is to see as many people as possible saved and on their way to Heaven. We are not trying to recruit anyone away from a church they already love. We are here for the people who do not have one.
You bring them in, and I will change them.
- Everyone welcome, whatever their race, background or income
- Care for people who have been hurt, including by a church
- A free food pantry for families in the community
- Teaching the Bible in Alexander since 1975
