Romans
Lesson #6
Misunderstanding of chapter 7.
There has been a lot of misunderstanding of Romans 7 inasmuch that many believe
that Paul is saying that there still (even after coming to Christ) are two natures in us,
the nature of Adam and the nature of Christ. This is not possible. Both natures can
not coexists in the redeemed person. You can not be condemned and justified at
the same time. You can not have both sin and righteousness ruling you at the same
time. You are either in Adam or in Christ. You can't be in both.
Chapter 7 begins with an analogy comparing marriage and the law. A woman can
not please two men at the same time. A believer can not be married to Christ and
the law at the same time. (Romans 7:4) states that you used to be married to the law
but you died, as it were, with Christ on the cross and since you are dead you are no
longer married to the law. Then you came back to life again and are a new person
and now you are married to Christ.
For when (Romans 7:5)
   But now (Romans 7:6)
Beginning with (Romans 7:14)
Paul is speaking as a carnal man, sold under sin.
In verse 24 he cries out that he wants to be delivered from the body of this death.
No longer can a man use chapter 7 to justify his sins. We are not helpless in the
clutches of sin. In verse 20, speaking as the man under the law, he says that sin is
controlling him, but in chapter 6:22 he says that he has been freed from sin. Which
is it? Is he freed from sin or controlled by sin?
(Romans 8:1) There is therefore NOW no condemnation
verse 2 we are FREE from the law of sin and death.
Are you in the flesh or the spirit? The flesh refers to the body of sin, the Adamic nature.
(Romans 8:8-9)
Now we are led by the spirit of Christ and are sons of God. (Romans 8:14)
