Romans
Lesson #3

Scripture Reading - Romans Chapter 3 and 4

Are we saved by circumcision?

We have discovered in our previous studies that all mankind, both Jew and Gentile, are guilty before God and are under condemnation. There is only one thing that will pay the penalty of sin and that is death. (Romans 6: 23, 3:19, 3: 27-28)

The question that men grapple with is how can I get this death penalty off of me, or can I be saved by circumcision or by keeping the law?

What is the purpose of the law? How is the law established?

(Romans 3: 31) The law is established.
(Romans 3: 20) By the law we have the knowledge of sin.
(Romans 5: 20) The offence becomes greater because of the law.
(Romans 7: 13) Sin becomes exceedingly sinful.
(I Cor. 15: 56) The law strengthens sin.
(Gal 3: 19) The law was added to define sin.

We conclude that a man is justified by faith, without the deeds of the law. (Romans 3: 28)
Are we saved by circumcision?
        a. When did it begin? (Gen 17: 8, 14)
        b. Israel was not to neglect it. Gen 17: 14)
        c. Why did God seek to kill Moses? (Exodus 4: 24, 26)
        d. They must be circumcised in order to eat the Passover. (Exodus 12: 43, 45)
        e. They could not go into Caanan without circumcision. (Joshua 5: 2, 9)
        f. Some, in the early church, taught circumcision as the mark of salvation (Acts 15: 1)

Paul taught that circumcision was nothing. (I Cor 7: 19  Gal 5: 2, 6)

This was confirmed by the Gentiles being saved in (Acts 10)

Circumcision is to be in the heart not in the flesh. (Deut 10: 16 - Deut 30:6)

Those who worship God in the spirit and rejoice in Christ Jesus are the true circumcision.
Neither the law or circumcision can save us. It is only faith in Christ that can save us.
