Romans
Lesson #10
Scripture Reading (Romans 13)
The question that we will consider today is "Should a Christian be under subjection to
State and National laws?
1. Paul is very clear in his opening statement. Let every soul be subject to the higher
powers. What higher power is he speaking of?
2. Is this the powers of the government? If so, then are they ordained of God?
(1 Timothy 2:1-2, Titus 3:1, 1 Peter
2:13-17)
3. Is there a power greater than the power of the government? Yes, (Acts 5:27-29)
4. When, if ever, is civil disobedience allowed?
5. Are we to be afraid of rulers, judges, magistrates or policemen?
6. Does the Bible teach capital punishment? (Romans
13:4). We know the Old
Testament taught capital punishment, what about the new? (Acts 25:10-11)
7. Should a Christian pay their taxes? (Romans 13:7)
8. What debt could never be paid? The debt of love remains with us permanently and never leaves us; this is a debt which we both discharge every day and forever
owe.
9. If you are motivated by love, you need no other commandment.
10. Time is of the essence. Do what you need to do now.
11. Story of Augustines conversion.
